All About Jess!

Me and Jess [2009] @ BCDO
Me and Jess decided we would ask each other some questions to post on each-others blogs! Jess has been my rock lately with my walk back into the church and the feelings that come with it, we've been friends for about 7 years now. But its been one of those friendships where there seems to be such a gap for such a long time but the gap is never noticed when it is closed. Like a star, even though I don't see her all the time, I know she is still there!

1. How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?
  • Oo, that is hard. I honestly feel 20 but not always. I've been told I'm 30-13 by different people so it depends on what I'm doing at the time! haa I like being 20 because I feel challenged, respected yet safe in the knowledge that I don't have complete control of the wheel just yet. I love my elders, their advice and wisdom, yet love growing the young adults. What would I do without my elders, they are so funny!!!
2. Which is worse, failing or never trying?
  • This is hard, but Never trying it's gotta be. I hate that pit-of-ya-belly feeling when I see someone else achieve something I wanted to do but chickened out of! Also I'm a firm believer of if your a bird and you don't jump, how do you know you can't fly? Silly penguins.
3. If life is so short, why do we do so many things we don’t like and like so many things we don’t do?
  • I think this is like my chocolate problem:
  • If I eat to much I'll get fat, if I don't eat it I'll be moody.' haaa Life is short, but it is what we make it, it's all about balancing it out.
  • A Best Plan: Find a job you Love & Challenges you. You'll never be bored. Actually make time for people, give the internet time off. Love everyone, you cant help it if they don't want to smile, but your smile may make all the difference to them and you!
4. Are you doing what you believe in, or are you settling for what you are doing?
  • Atm I think I'm on the right track, trusting God and letting him drive me around. I used to settle for less but I have faith that God has got something a lot better planned out than anything I could of planned!
5. To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life has taken?
  • haa! Erm 60/40 to me up until last year. Currently 70/30 to God, he's teaching me to let go of one finger at a time.
6. Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?
  • Doing the right things. I can do a lot of things perfectly, but it doesn't make them the right thing to be doing with my time. Maybe like this questionnaire or my ton of coursework. My friend or the T.V
7. Have you ever seen insanity where you later saw creativity?
  • YES! haaaa I love creativity, everyone can be creative and I think your depth or understanding can come out hugely through being creative, not always but mostly! People can be seen as insane but I think it's more of letting go of yourself when your being creative, it's a vunrablitiy. It can be quite beautiful.
8. What one thing have you not done that you really want to do? What’s holding you back?
  • Fear. haa I want to go skydiving desperately, but I need someone to do it with lol! Last year I conquered rollercoasters with my good girl pal Bex. Think year I'm thinking Skydiving. I wont let fear hold me, but I'd like a hand to hold! haaa
9. Do you push the elevator button more than once? Do you really believe it makes the elevator faster?
  • YES! I do, either that or I question if I actually pushed it hard enough! haaa
10. Have you been the kind of friend you want as a friend?
  • No, I can honestly say I haven't been the bestest of friends in the past, This year things are gonna change!
11. Which is worse, when a good friend moves away, or losing touch with a good friend who lives right near you?
  • Losing touch, I hate that.I understand that people can be busy though. I think that's what I loved about school (Boooo Hisss) That everyone has to be there so you all make the best of it. This reminds me.. *picks up phone*
12.What are you most grateful for?
  • Jesus, my family and my friends he has given me. I've never felt lonely or bored for long! I'm very blessed to have people who care and support me. Plus all my cooking knowledge has come from these people!
13. Has your greatest fear ever come true?
  • No, I'm confident wont either!
14. If you just won a million pounds, would you quit your job?
  • Yeah I'd leave my shop job (yet I'd miss everyone!). But I would go to work, but it wouldn't be about the money, I'd do so much volunteering with young people, you wouldn't find me on a beach. Well maybe for a little bit haa

Featured Post: Bag of S**t

Over the last few weeks I have been inspired to use this activity in work I do with young people and it has really hit me how powerful it can be, I wanted to make a short post to share how I had gone along with the activity and how young people responded but thought it was best to share the blog post that inspired me from my best friends blog  ‘Diaries of a Black Dog’ you can read below. Bag of S**T “I had a counselling appointment today at 12:30pm, got to 12pm and that’s when the nerves really start kicking in, I have nothing to talk about, it’s going to be awkward, I’m not in the mood to talk, I CAN’T do it… Anyway I went and we ended up sitting on the floor writing on stones…sounds weird I know but believe me it was POWERFUL. So basically the idea was for me write all the negative thoughts and negative things I think are attached to me on stones and put them in a little bag (we named the bag of shit) and then carry that bag around with me. When someone puts me on the spot...

Pressure

As some of you are already aware, I’m in my final year of my BA (Hons) Youth Work degree which I’ve been completing with the Open University. Due to finish on June 12th after a 3hr final exam (which I’m already anxious for). Over the last five years of studying, lots has changed and I’ve studied through lots of different climates and seasons of my life. I’ve put myself under lots of pressure to complete assignments as well as times of taking off the pressure and being a bit slack in my studies. I have to admit though, that over last few months, I have tried to take the pressure off for the long-term but turn it up maybe a week or so before the deadline, since doing this my assignment marks have improved. It’s certainly not healthy to not put any pressure on myself to complete my assignments, especially when it’s a self-motivated degree, which I need to be so self-disciplined in. I just wanted to write a little note to remind myself and inspire others to just turn down t...

Perspective

"Sometimes a change of Perspective is all it takes to see the light." - Dan Brown It's so true that we all see things differently to one another, yet it can be really hard sometimes to believe that someone is seeing something from a different perspective to you. It can cause conflict and can damage relationships if left un-dealt with.  Working with young people has taught me so much about myself and also given me tools to support friends and family sometimes facing difficulty in agreeing or in understanding what is happening for the other person.  A worker last week told me this useful exercise to explain perspective to young people, put a box out in front of them and ask them to draw what they can see, from where they are sat.  (The box might have numbers/drawings or words on, it doesn't really matter). You, the worker (or second person taking part) then draw the box as you see it from a different angle of course. The two dra...
