Back to University..

So, for me and many others, its that time of year again, back to University, or in my case, back to feelings of loss of a social life and work hard, study harder. Time for me to start setting the alarm clock earlier and get some essay writing and work planning done before even getting to work and then on top of this, spend my Saturday mornings sat on the laptop listening to my fellow students talk about the current work topic.

Image result for youth workI am currently starting my FINAL module (E318) towards my BA(Hons) Youth Work degree with the Open University. That sentence feels really strange to say, it'll be the end of an era, my life has changed so much since starting in October 2013. I've lived in three different places, worked in three different settings and got married in the last year to my beautiful and motivating wife.

During my first module I was living with my best friend and her partner, they were awesome supporting my studies and having someone who was also studying in the house really helped me to keep motivated. I lived alone in a flat for two modules and became a bit more slack with my studies, but with the amazing support from my colleagues, I pushed through the procrastination and came out of two modules with amazing results which motivated me past the mid-stage of the degree. Then last year, I decided to fast-track and complete two modules at the same time and planning a wedding and starting a new job, you're probably thinking, that's silly - but for some reason, probably divine intervention, it all worked. Thanks again to colleagues in both settings and my wife aka 'Mrs Motivator' that kept me going and pushed me further than my own belief to help me succeed.

So finally, I have settled into my new role within the Youth Emotional Support Service which I thoroughly enjoy, working with an amazing team and management. I’ve finally planned and confirmed my initial work plan ready for submission next week [31-10-2018]. In my full-time role I work with young people aged 11-18 years old, helping them to develop their resilience in relation to emotional well-being to face the battles that life throughs at us all. I’m also working part-time with Arun Youth Projects [Arun Church] still as a Youth Worker in Charge as well as supporting another Youth WiC, two nights a week, this is a great opportunity to enjoy the company of young people and also help them realise the amazing talents they have, support them to develop social skills and ultimately prepare them to be effective citizens within their community and the world!

All the best to anyone else reading this that is also studying, you own it! If you want to keep in touch and become a ‘motivator-mate’ then I’m well up for that!

BIG LOVE

MATT

Featured Post: Bag of S**t

Over the last few weeks I have been inspired to use this activity in work I do with young people and it has really hit me how powerful it can be, I wanted to make a short post to share how I had gone along with the activity and how young people responded but thought it was best to share the blog post that inspired me from my best friends blog  ‘Diaries of a Black Dog’ you can read below. Bag of S**T “I had a counselling appointment today at 12:30pm, got to 12pm and that’s when the nerves really start kicking in, I have nothing to talk about, it’s going to be awkward, I’m not in the mood to talk, I CAN’T do it… Anyway I went and we ended up sitting on the floor writing on stones…sounds weird I know but believe me it was POWERFUL. So basically the idea was for me write all the negative thoughts and negative things I think are attached to me on stones and put them in a little bag (we named the bag of shit) and then carry that bag around with me. When someone puts me on the spot...

Pressure

As some of you are already aware, I’m in my final year of my BA (Hons) Youth Work degree which I’ve been completing with the Open University. Due to finish on June 12th after a 3hr final exam (which I’m already anxious for). Over the last five years of studying, lots has changed and I’ve studied through lots of different climates and seasons of my life. I’ve put myself under lots of pressure to complete assignments as well as times of taking off the pressure and being a bit slack in my studies. I have to admit though, that over last few months, I have tried to take the pressure off for the long-term but turn it up maybe a week or so before the deadline, since doing this my assignment marks have improved. It’s certainly not healthy to not put any pressure on myself to complete my assignments, especially when it’s a self-motivated degree, which I need to be so self-disciplined in. I just wanted to write a little note to remind myself and inspire others to just turn down t...

Perspective

"Sometimes a change of Perspective is all it takes to see the light." - Dan Brown It's so true that we all see things differently to one another, yet it can be really hard sometimes to believe that someone is seeing something from a different perspective to you. It can cause conflict and can damage relationships if left un-dealt with.  Working with young people has taught me so much about myself and also given me tools to support friends and family sometimes facing difficulty in agreeing or in understanding what is happening for the other person.  A worker last week told me this useful exercise to explain perspective to young people, put a box out in front of them and ask them to draw what they can see, from where they are sat.  (The box might have numbers/drawings or words on, it doesn't really matter). You, the worker (or second person taking part) then draw the box as you see it from a different angle of course. The two dra...
